Hydroxycitric acid is a derivative of citric acid, widely found in tropical rainforest plants such as Garcinia Cambogia and Hibiscus Subdariffa.
Hydroxycitric acid is the sodium salt of a plant metabolite that is found in beans and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects.
It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activities of lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase as well as the toxicity of metal hydroxides in vitro.
It also inhibits protein synthesis and induces apoptosis in k562 cells.

Hydroxycitric acid is often used in place of tamarind or lemon as a flavoring agent for curries, and is also used as a preservative and herbal tonic.
