Chitosan is a chitin byproduct derived from the exoskeleton of crustaceans such as shrimp, crab, lobster, and clams, as well as the cell wall of Reishi mushrooms.
Chitosan is an excipient used in pharmaceutical preparations as well as biomedical applications such as wound dressings.
It is used to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity,and other ailments, although there is no scientific evidence to back up several of its applications.

Chitosan is the second most abundant (only next to cellulose) biopolymer and is widely distributed.
It is mainly distributed in many lower animals particularly the shells of arthropods such as shrimp, crabs and insects.
It is also presented in the cell wall of in lower plants such as algae and fungus.
