Sulfuryl chloride is prepared by reacting sulfur dioxide with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst, such as activated carbon or camphor.
Sulfuryl chloride is used as a chlorinating and sulfonating agent in organic synthesis. It also is used in military gas.
